History of Mobile Phones

The history of mobile phones can be considered under three broad heads:

ò€¢ Early Stage

ò€¢ First generation mobiles

ò€¢ Second generation mobiles

ò€¢ Third generation mobiles

Early Stage:

The birth of mobile phones is actually through the idea of using the mobile rigs, on police vehicles, taxi radios etc. These phones however were installed permanently in the vehicles. Later these gave way to transportable phones. By late sixties, the phones that were introduced had to stay within the cell area so that they could be served by one service station. But the main disadvantage was that, the cell phone could not be used in other cell areas. By 1973, Motorola introduced the DynaTAC prototype phone.

First Generation:

Motorola introduced the first handheld mobile, the model being Dyan TAC8000X. These phones were based on cellular networks, which were present in close proximity. These were provided with the handover, so the signal was maintained even when the phone moved from one area to another. Analog transmission was used for this. However the most interesting fact however was, the phones were as large as a briefcase.

Second Generation:

This includes the phones that were introduced in the 1990s. Types such as GSM, iDEN, CDMA were introduced. United States of America came up with the first digital cellular phone. GSM network was introduced. The phones involved the digital circuit switched transmission. With the development in technology and electronics, the brick size phones gave away to smaller phones which weighed just about 100 to 200 grams.

Third Generation:

The third generation mobiles were introduced on the basis of some standards. These standards related only to the requirements and not the technology. The idea of having a worldwide standard broke and gave rise to many other standards. The third generation mobile phone systems include the UMTS and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO.
