Portable GPS and Kids
With electronic components getting smaller and smaller by the year, the options for placing a portable GPS with your child grows and grows. Using the GPS location ability of a cell phone is both practical and problematic. Kids have notoriously wonderful skills at losing and misplacing things they should have with them and this can be a real downfall of this particular type of portable GPS unit. Now, the location device can be something they would not remove such as a watch on the wrist. While a portable GPS device in a watch won"t give you directions anywhere, it can transmit the location of the watch and the wearer at all times. This is a much more secure way of keeping track of the exact location of your children at all times.
Unfortunately, even this device isn"t without problems of its own, however. There is, of course, the possibility of the child removing the watch for any number of reasons, such as getting in a swimming pool. There is the chance they may forget to put it back on and the portable GPS unit would then only tell you where the watch itself is located. This is where truly miniature electronics come into the picture. Portable GPS units that can be sewn directly into clothing are now available.
These types of portable GPS units are very simple. You would call the phone number correlated with the portable GPS device and it would send back a text message with its exact location. The device won"t ring or do anything to alert the wearer that their location is being checked, but it is something that won"t be lost while the child is out and about playing.
Portable GPS devices are, generally speaking, not cheap and the smaller and more discreet they get, the more they tend to cost. Some devices are part of a program that can alert you if the device goes outside of a certain area. This type of service typically has a monthly subscription fee, but can be very affordable.
